Being in the mountains can introduce a large variety of weather patterns. High in the mountains a sunny, cloudless day can suddenly turn to rain with thunderstorms, or sudden snow. Having the right protection from the elements is critical both to staying relatively comfortable as well as protecting yourself from the elements.
The Rainier Storm Shell Jacket and pant can cover both of those objectives while being inanely lightweight and quiet when worn.
First the jacket! I keep my jacket easily accessible so that as weather develops or I need protection on a windy exposed ridge I can easily get to it. Features of the jacket that I love include the integrated hood, the pit zips and the pockets.
The hood has an oversize feel to it but that is what make it great to wear with a helmet, or hat plus the hood moves with you when you turn your head. I love that this hood covers the sides of my face when worn to help protect my skin from high wind blasts and driving rain, both of which I was exposed to wearing this gear.
Some other great features are that the pockets are all easily accessible even with a
harness and a pack on, and the pit zips help regulate body temps allowing ventilation when you getting warm on those never ending ascents.
Did I mention how light this gear it? It makes no sense to leave these layers behind to save weight as you will hardly know they are there.
These pants are my favorite of any hard-shell layer I have tried to date. With 7/8 length side zippers you are able to vent and
easily put on or take of the pant with crampons. In addition the back of the pant has zip access for when nature calls and you don’t want to remove your harness.
The quality of Eddie Bauer’s Rainier Shell line is far superior to any other hard shell line I have used to date. This lightweight sturdy gear can stand up to the toughest weather, is comfortable, and has a great look.
